Learning that your child has a disability is one of the most difficult things for a parent to
hear. The anger, confusion, depression and devastation that go along with this news are all
common reactions. It can be difficult for a parent to cope with this news when they don't
know where to go for help. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Parent-to-Parent
Outreach Program is a service for parents who have a child in the NICU. This program
provides parent-to-parent support and emergency needs support for parents of a child born
with a significant developmental or medical disability. Parents are visited and consoled by
some of the very parents that the program has assisted in the past. These parent mentors
work at seven area hospitals and serve the English, Spanish and Vietnamese-speaking
populations. Mentor responsibilities include initial parent contacts at the hospital,
establishing connections with community resources, ongoing support to the family, follow-up
on agency referrals, accessing resource information and completing required tracking
reports. FSN has learned from parents who have a child with a disability that they need
direct support and information from other parents who have shared the same life
experiences. Through the Parent-to-Parent Outreach Program, parents now have that
opportunity. Our parent mentors serve the following hospitals:
1. Fountain Valley Regional Hospital
2. Anaheim Memorial Hospital
3. St. Jude Hospital
4. UCI Medical Center
5. Western Medical Center
6. St. Joseph Hospital
7. Mission Hospital
In addition, this program offers a support group for Latino mothers who have a child with a
disability. The support group is run by FSN's bilingual parent mentor and is offered on the
first Wednesday of every month at 10am at FSN.
